Many people mistakenly think that anonymity on the web is equal to privacy. It is not.


Don’t be lulled into thinking that email services and social media sites that allow using pseudonyms to create profiles, which may keep your identity anonymous, are also keeping your identity private. Most have signup procedures and logging from which they can determine your ISP (internet service provider) as well as your computer IP (internet protocol) address, and thereby perhaps even your real identity.


We all have a right to privacy. A basic definition of privacy is freedom from unauthorized intrusion. Whether we are purchasing goods using our credit card, or expressing unpopular opinions on a blog, or transmitting sensitive business information, we each have that right.


We all have a right to privacy.  Make sure you are doing all that you can to protect yours. Some suggested tips include: 

(1) Protect your computer and smartphone with strong, up-to-date security software

(2) Use strong passwords

(3) Be mindful of what you post on social media that could potentially be used to harm you – your whereabouts, your children’s or pet’s name, any personal details or data others should not know

(4) Learn to spot spam and internet scams; read thoroughly before you click

(5) Only use reputable websites when making online purchases

(6) Monitor your credit report
